Full disclosure- I am a friend of the author. Fuller disclosure- I am a fan of his autobiographical short stories. Fullest disclosure - I was more than a little worried when he first mentioned he was going to do a fictional novel set in the late 1800's. A Western? Butte, MT? A woman on the run? Not exactly his turf.So you can imagine my relief when this novel turned out to be a real page turner. Ilya, starts in New York society, but quickly finds reason to leave the comfort of the bourgeoisie for a cross country journey to lose herself among the immigrants flooding West. She crosses paths and picks up a cast of characters whose stories held me straight through an evening- canceling previous plans along the way.
I am anxious for the next installment, which I hear will be available soon. This is a novel likely to be a screenplay and movie before the year is out. Get in on the ground floor and buy the kindle version, but make sure you don't have anything planned, cause once you start, you won't put it down. Don't just take my word for it, check out the opening comments from others with considerable story telling chops.

I had the pleasure of reading this novel, quite a while ago. In this new world of technology, I admit that things don't always make sense. So the idea that you can purchase this novel and ... somehow read it on a device... still eludes me. It's that good a book! I'd buy the hard-copy, for those who still love to read, and savor every page. But that's me.
Heck of a yarn.
The first chapter explodes with a shocking bang, but the wild ride is just getting started. Ilya is the epitome of a lovable anti-hero, and the worse she was, the more I fell in love with her. Surrounded by an ever-unfolding cast of quirky characters, this is a rollicking and hilarious tale of fortune seekers, criminals, lovers and manipulators. Best part there's a sequel! I really hope to see this made into a film; rich descriptions make it really come alive.
This is a novel that tries to bridge several worlds. Ilya, a woman living in the Victorian Era in New York City, has the sensibilities and smarts of someone of our own century. Naturally, from the first page you know she's headed for trouble. Her initial woes revolve around the murder of a man who richly deserves it. She knows that, given the male-dominated society that binds her like a corset, she won't be allowed to get away with it (concealing the body in a coal bin, where it is sure to be discovered during the next cold snap, is a stopgap). Ilya heads west, where she believes her ingrained frontier mentality may be a better fit, and where violent and capricious death is more the norm. She soon fits right in with a revolving cast of sometimes-bizarre characters. That first dead body won't be the last.
It is no mean literary feat to capture the feel, dialects and morality of both East Coast society and its raw Western counterpart in the same book. Author Scot Crawford has done some prodigious research. But many good researchers can't write. Crawford can. His descriptive prose can be a joy to read, although at times I wish his Western characters, such as Bridger, Donal, Cathal, Juice, Bit and Rex, had a bit more schoolin' - I occasionally felt like I needed a translator. And while I'm sure the folks out West had plenty to cuss about, being shot down with appalling regularity as they were, I'm not sure their vocabulary was as frequently lurid as a modern-day rapper. Of course, I could be wrong about that. As I said, Crawford seems to have done his research.
The plot and structure of DOUBLEJACK probably would have worked better if the novel were 100 pages shorter. Too much description and dialogue, no matter how well executed, often slow the narrative to a crawl.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a page turner. The main characters were great together. Iiya was a strong female lead.
Scot Crawford's novel digs deep into a world that was still Americans' for the taking and some of the driven, tortured people who fought to conquer it. Winners and losers' souls alike are dug into so deeply that we feel what it's like to walk (or stumble) around in their skin. It's a page-turning journey.
I highly recommend this book.
I truly liked Doublejack, and being from Butte where Ilya and her cast of characters end up makes it all that much better. The first chapter is imaginative and gripping. Not that I would do anything like Ilya does, but a woman can dream, can't she? Scot has a way with words, despite the lack of some punctuation. Makes the reader have to work a little, which I found appealing. His imagery is marvelous, and he has the ability to make you walk right along with his characters. I know I was in the mountains with Ilya. I can remember the contours of the land, the feel of the wind, the darkness of the night because I was there. Reading this novel is much like watching a movie because Scot's descriptions are so alive and real. His characters are interesting with enough baggage to keep us guessing, and even the zanier of them become people you want to befriend. And then to land in Butte, Montana, home of the Copper Kings, the Richest Hill on Earth, the nation's major supplier of copper that helped electrify the world. Too cool! Scot researched the city and its inhabitants well and made this metropolitan city come alive. Butte cosmopolitan, strenuous, unique, prosperous. Stay tuned for the next installment in Ilya's journey.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I loved the characters and the situations, and Crawford's writing style is colorful and effortless. I was always eager to get back into the story, andI can see why people have said it would make a great film. I also can't help seeing a connection between Bridger and Huck Finn. If Huck had stayed with his Pap all those years, instead of getting away while he was young, he probably would have turned into a man just like Bridger.
