THE ACCIDENTAL HERO edition by Joshua Graham Religion Spirituality eBooks

I actually put in the author John Grisham as I love his books. This book came up free on the Kindle and just looking at the J and the G I assumed it was a John Grisham novel. I was, however shocked at the length of the book. I was someone disappointed given some of the books I have read by John and I have never known him to write about Christianity so when I saw a book about Christiananity from him I was so very excited! After the book they have a sample of another book of his (still thinking it is John Grisham) called Beyond Justice and after reading the first two chapters I was hooked! Ordered the book and was furious when it came in and I read the book was written by Joshua Graham. I was saying I put in an authors name I LIKE to read and I get someone else! I was so mad! I have to tell you that I think it was GOD! I am one of the slowest readers on earth and I read his next book in record time! I won't go into that book since I will be rating it also but wow! I am truly blessed to have a new AUTHOR I LOVE to read and will be looking into his other books and just hope and pray they are about God, faith .... etc. The book itself gets a 2 or 3 star but here it gets a 4 star because of what it did for me in finding a new reader and suggesting Joshua Graham to other Christian friends.

As a Christian I wish I could honestly give more stars to this novel. The promotion is for THE ACCIDENTAL HERO. But it begins with a short story called "Big Pete." When that so-so story is over, it advertises ACCIDENTAL HERO with a short sample, for $4.99. Not a nice (honest?) way to promote. Nor did I have much identity with the hero of the novel. Then the author's propensity to overblown language is a put-off. Examples "Pale beams from a pregnant moon cut through the palm trees that lined our street." "Dave Pendelton scraped me off the lawn." "A thousand cockroaches skittered up my back as she studied my face." When writing a crime novel (unless it involves Elizabeth Barrett Browning), don't get poetic or stretch your figures of speech beyond breaking point! And lay off that internet promotional jargon "Grab DARKROOM today!" You can't grab an E-book!
first off, the bones of this story are promising. reluctant assassin hears God's call and turns his life around, and so on and so forth-but while attempting to flesh it out, Mr. Graham completely ruined it. Big Pete (yes, the assassin's name is Big Pete) jumps from cold-blooded killer to saved by a cheesy revival meeting with a ridiculous lack of inner turmoil. and for a redemption story, God is surprisingly absent, replaced by some verses on fast-food wrappers. his conversion, a scene that manages to be both melodramatic and anticlimactic, leads to his eventual execution (which is-justice? I guess?). add to this the fact that it's a framed story written in bad ghetto lingo, which is at best laughable and at worst insulting, and you get the picture. not a bad story, but a weak one, and it reads like a first draft, not a finished work. if you're writing an ad for your next book, at least make it intriguing. this was exhausting and came across to me as more of a dumbing-down of salvation than a story of hope about it.
This is the story of a ruthless hitman with a reputation to protect, told second hand by his cell mate. That was a genius move - usually I have a story figured out and I wasn't sure if he was actually going to kill the preacher or not. He was on death row after all.

As a Christian writer, I have faced the dilema of a dirty, rotten, lost character and his development into a man of God. In the real world, ugly people use ugly language. So how do I create the worst of the worst character without him using those words? But as a believer, how do I use them? So be aware, there are a few "mild" expletives.

Also, it seemed a little too short. I would have liked to know Pete a little deeper for a little longer. In spite of that, what I did get was very well written and very well described. Not everyone can properly explain or discuss an encounter with a supernatural God and what exactly takes place, what happens to a person during that event.

In this busy society, when I can find time to just relax and read, I often feel guilty that I didn't pick up my Bible. But sometimes we need to just be able to unwind with nothing deep pressed in on us. I especially appreciated this story since it had scripture, powerful scripture, not simply referenced, but written out, that served to soothe that guilt. It was also written in a way that I felt I wasn't reading some short story that just wasted 45 minutes of my life, but that I just witnessed someone's testimony, and by the word of our testimony we lift up and encourage one another. If people can read ghost stories and wonder if it could be true, why couldn't they read this and wonder? Thanks Josh! I look forward to your other work. But....what happened to the cat?
Although not the kind of story that I normally read, this one recommended, and I decided to give it a try--I was pleasantly surprised. It feels like a typical gang or mobster story at first but then slowly turns into something completely different. I won't spoil it by giving away any details. You'll have to read it to see, and as it is s short one, it won't take long.
